She teaches anyone who’s never finished a knitting project how to knit in exchange for their first scarf. Her belief is that each first scarf is a lucky object because it is the only first scarf the knitter can make. Though this is a simple idea this project puts emphasis on not only aquiring the skill, but also on the unusual beauty and power of creating an object from scratch.
An interesting take on knit virginity. I guess I considered anybody who’s even just cast on or tried a few stitches to not be a knitting virgin anymore, but I guess I see the logic in making “finishing” a requirement for losing this particular type of virginity if the point of knitting is the product. Ms. Hall must not be as much of a process knitter as I am. I’d never have thought of this.
